Azman Nor (b. 1985, Terengganu) is a Malaysian watercolour artist with an academic background in Applied Chemistry from UiTM Shah Alam. Largely self-taught, he later refined his practice through masterclasses with internationally recognised watercolour artists. His works have appeared in local and international exhibitions, including presentations at the National Art Gallery, Maybank Art Gallery and international watercolour events. He is particularly recognised for nostalgic portrayals of familiar Malaysian subjects, including old motorcycles and scenes drawn from everyday life.

In these two paintings, an ageing motorcycle becomes more than a mode of transport—it is transformed into a vessel of memory. Viewed from the front in one work and from the side in the other, its faded paintwork, rusted metal and worn components suggest years of faithful service and countless journeys.

Large bunches of bananas surround the motorcycle, introducing brilliant shades of yellow and green against the deep blue background. Their freshness and abundance contrast beautifully with the weathered machine, while also evoking roadside stalls, small traders and the familiar rhythms of Malaysian community life.

Azman Nor’s expressive watercolour technique balances careful observation with spontaneity. Flowing washes, broken edges, splashes and areas of untouched paper capture strong tropical light while preserving the medium’s natural transparency. Born in Miri, Sarawak, in 1970, Ting Cho Chien is a Malaysian contemporary artist known for paintings inspired by local culture, nature and traditional textiles. He studied Fine Art at the Central Academy of Art in Malaysia.

His signature works often combine detailed batik motifs with landscapes, still-life subjects and familiar scenes from Malaysian life. Through strong colours and intricate patterns, he transforms traditional fabric into a contemporary visual language.

This captivating painting creates a dialogue between nature and cultural heritage. At its centre is a lush green landscape, dense with tropical vegetation. It offers a quiet window into the natural world.

Surrounding the landscape are richly patterned batik fabrics. Deep blue, vivid red and intricate floral motifs create energy, rhythm and contrast. The brilliant red section immediately attracts the eye, while the narrow fabric panels guide us towards the peaceful greenery.

The composition suggests that nature and culture are closely connected. The forest represents growth and life, while the batik patterns carry tradition, identity and memories passed through generations.

These two paintings by Zaharuddin celebrate the beauty and richness of Malaysia’s tropical fruits.

Last week, a first-time buyer walked into our gallery and found a painting she really loved. She stood in front of it for quite some time, admiring it… but for a few reasons, she just couldn’t make the decision that day.

Yesterday, she came back.

She walked a few rounds around the gallery, searching for that same painting. Then she asked us where it was.

Sadly… it had already been sold. 💔

I could see the shock and disappointment on her face. We showed her several other beautiful works from the same series and by the same artist, but somehow, the feeling just wasn’t the same.

Because when it comes to art, sometimes you don’t choose the painting — the painting chooses you. ❤️

In the end, she left the gallery without a painting and with a very upset face. The best I could tell her was:

“When the artist sends us new pieces, I’ll show them to you first, ya…”

This little experience reminded me of something I always share with collectors:

Malaysian artist Yong Look Lam was born in Klang in 1962. He graduated from the Kuala Lumpur College of Art with a Diploma in Fine Art in 1982, followed by a Diploma in Watercolour in 1983. A founding member of the Malaysian Watercolour Society, he is recognised for paintings inspired by Malaysian villages, heritage architecture and the relationship between people and their surroundings.

This panoramic watercolour painting captures a row of traditional riverside shophouses standing closely along the water’s edge. Their varied heights, weathered façades and overlapping rooftops create an engaging architectural rhythm, preserving the character of an old Malaysian town.

This atmospheric streetscape captures the quiet energy of a traditional Malaysian market street. Rows of weathered shophouses extend into the distance, their wooden shutters, tiled roofs, faded façades and colourful awnings preserving the architectural character of an earlier time.

At street level, market stalls glow beneath shaded canopies as vendors arrange their produce and residents move through their daily routines. The scattered figures—some walking, shopping or pausing between stalls—bring warmth and life to the scene without disturbing its peaceful mood.

Soft daylight filters between the buildings and falls across the road in gentle tones of cream, pink and gold. Expressive brushstrokes and layered textures soften the architectural details, creating the feeling of a memory rather than a purely realistic record.
