Azman Nor (b. 1985, Terengganu) is a Malaysian watercolour artist with an academic background in Applied Chemistry from UiTM Shah Alam. Largely self-taught, he later refined his practice through masterclasses with internationally recognised watercolour artists. His works have appeared in local and international exhibitions, including presentations at the National Art Gallery, Maybank Art Gallery and international watercolour events. He is particularly recognised for nostalgic portrayals of familiar Malaysian subjects, including old motorcycles and scenes drawn from everyday life.
In these two paintings, an ageing motorcycle becomes more than a mode of transport—it is transformed into a vessel of memory. Viewed from the front in one work and from the side in the other, its faded paintwork, rusted metal and worn components suggest years of faithful service and countless journeys.
Large bunches of bananas surround the motorcycle, introducing brilliant shades of yellow and green against the deep blue background. Their freshness and abundance contrast beautifully with the weathered machine, while also evoking roadside stalls, small traders and the familiar rhythms of Malaysian community life.
Azman Nor’s expressive watercolour technique balances careful observation with spontaneity. Flowing washes, broken edges, splashes and areas of untouched paper capture strong tropical light while preserving the medium’s natural transparency. Together, the paintings form a warm reflection on perseverance, livelihood and the quiet beauty held within ordinary objects.
