People always ask, “What’s it like running a frame shop and an art gallery?”
Well… officially, our opening hours are 10am–7pm.
Unofficially? 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 😂
Morning: “Can this painting be ready urgently?”
Lunch: “Which frame looks better — this one or that one?”
Dinner: “Can you send me a photo of the frame?”
Almost bedtime: “Sorry to disturb you… just one quick question…”
And somehow, that one quick question turns into a full framing consultation. 🤣
Running a frame shop means you are a frame advisor, designer, colour matcher, problem solver, delivery coordinator, installer and sometimes an emergency rescue team for damaged artwork.
Running an art gallery means you become a curator, photographer, copywriter, event planner, salesperson, artist coordinator, social-media person… and occasionally the cleaner too. 😆
And then comes the public holiday…
Everyone happily gets their replacement public holiday off. 🎉
The staff: “Enjoy your holiday, boss!”
The boss: “Thank you… see you when I’m at work.” 😂😂
Sometimes working on a public holiday is simply a MUST — because when everyone else gets their replacement day off, somehow the boss is the replacement! 🤣
Staff have replacement leave.
Boss has replacement staff duties. 😂
Some days we are discussing beautiful paintings with collectors. Other days we are carrying giant frames, chasing deadlines, replying to WhatsApp messages, opening the gallery on a public holiday and wondering, “Did I actually have lunch today?”
But after all these years, there is still something very satisfying about seeing an artwork beautifully framed, hung on the wall, and watching the customer smile.
So yes… the shop closes at 7pm. The brain doesn’t.
And sometimes, the public holiday is public… just not for the boss. 🤣🤣
