Lim Kim Hai is a prominent Malaysian artist widely recognised for his distinctive still-life paintings, particularly his celebrated apple series. Throughout his artistic practice, ordinary fruits and familiar objects become more than simple subjects—they are transformed into reflections on life, relationships, harmony and the passage of time.
This elegant still life by Lim Kim Hai, dated 1990, brings together a generous cluster of golden grapes and two warm oranges resting upon softly folded fabric. The careful treatment of light gives the fruits a wonderful sense of volume, while the folds of the cloth create depth and quiet movement across the composition.
The rambutans gathered closely together can also be seen as a quiet metaphor for family and community—different individual forms sharing one space.
Strong vertical stripes in the background contrast beautifully with the natural, rounded forms of the fruit. The painting carries a feeling of abundance, harmony and simple pleasures
Lim Kim Hai reminds us that art does not always need an extraordinary subject to tell a meaningful story. Sometimes the things we see every day can become the most enduring symbols of life.
For collectors of Malaysian art, his works offer a wonderful combination of recognisable imagery, technical skill and thoughtful storytelling—paintings that are easy to enjoy visually yet continue to reveal meaning over time.
