Why Do Chinese Paintings & Calligraphy Easily Develop Mold?

Traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy can be particularly vulnerable to mold and fungus, especially in Malaysia’s warm and humid climate. This is largely because traditional works are often created on Xuan (rice) paper or silk, both of which are porous and readily absorb moisture from the surrounding air.

Humidity is the biggest concern. When an artwork is kept in a damp room, against a humid wall, or inside a frame without sufficient protection, moisture can remain trapped for long periods. Combined with warm temperatures and limited airflow, this creates an ideal environment for mold growth. Organic materials used in traditional mounting—such as paper, silk and starch-based paste—can also provide nutrients for mold.

What Can We Do When Mold Appears on Chinese Paintings or Calligraphy?

When mold is discovered, early treatment is very important. The longer mold remains on Xuan paper, silk or traditional mounting materials, the deeper the staining may penetrate and the more difficult it becomes to restore.

When mold or staining first appears, early treatment gives a better chance of achieving a good result. Light or recent mold may sometimes be cleaned almost completely, while older and darker spots that have penetrated deeply into the paper may only improve by approximately 70% or less.

Every piece is different, and 100% stain removal cannot be guaranteed. The purpose of treatment is not to make an old artwork look artificially new, but to carefully improve, stabilise and preserve the original calligraphy for the years ahead.
