Inspired by the coastal communities and maritime heritage of Sabah, this captivating series by Dr. Zaimie Sahibil offers a unique aerial perspective of life on the water. Floating homes, fishing boats, and interconnected wooden structures appear like islands of light against vibrant oceans of blue, turquoise, and emerald.
Through his expressive use of colour and texture, Zaimie transforms familiar village scenes into poetic visual landscapes. The works celebrate the resilience, harmony, and cultural richness of Sabah’s coastal communities while inviting viewers to reflect on the close relationship between people and the sea.
The series is both contemporary and deeply rooted in Bornean identity—where everyday life becomes a beautiful tapestry of colour, movement, and connection.
These remarkable works showcase Zaimie’s signature style, combining cultural storytelling with a dynamic contemporary visual language inspired by the waters of Sabah.
