What is tempered glass ?

Tempered glass (also known as toughened glass) is a type of safety glass that’s been processed to increase its strength compared to normal (annealed) glass.

🔧 Manufacturing Process

  1. Heating: Glass is heated to over 600°C (about 1112°F).
  2. Rapid Cooling: It’s then rapidly cooled with high-pressure air jets, a process called quenching.
  3. This creates compressive stress on the surface and tensile stress inside, making it much stronger.

📈 Properties

  • Strength: 4–5 times stronger than standard glass.
  • Safety: When broken, it shatters into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards.
  • Thermal Resistance: Can withstand temperature changes up to ~250°C without cracking.
  • Scratch Resistance: Better than regular glass, but not completely scratch-proof.

Common sizes: 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm for things like doors, partitions, and tabletops.
