Stephanie Kuen, born in 1967, is a Malaysian artist celebrated for her vibrant and evocative depictions of Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage. A graduate of the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1987, she initially pursued a career in commercial art before dedicating herself to fine art painting around the year 2000.
Her artworks are renowned for their bold, voluptuous colors and abstract figurative styles, often portraying themes related to the “Nyonya Baba” culture, which reflects the Peranakan heritage of Malaysia. Kuen employs acrylic on canvas to express the beauty of this heritage, capturing the essence of Malaysian life and traditions.
Kuen Stephanie’s paintings are a celebration of culture, tradition, and human connection, particularly focusing on Peranakan (Baba-Nyonya) heritage and daily life. Her works feature bold colors, simplified faceless figures, and nostalgic compositions, capturing the warmth and richness of family gatherings and social traditions.
The cheongsam (qipao) dresses in floral patterns reflect heritage and femininity. The tea set, fruits, and background details bring out the essence of home and hospitality. The traditional décor, teapots, and vintage cabinets evoke nostalgia, reminiscent of old Peranakan homes.
