Jehan Chan (1937–2011) was a respected Malaysian artist born in Melaka. He studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, where he was guided by renowned artist Cheong Soo Pieng. Celebrated for his watercolours and distinctive experiments with crinkled rice paper, Jehan Chan frequently portrayed fishing villages, the Melaka River, coastal landscapes, lotus ponds and koi. His work beautifully combines traditional Chinese painting influences with the atmosphere and character of Malaysian life
In this peaceful riverside scene, traditional fishing boats rest quietly upon calm waters. A lone fisherman occupies the foreground, rendered with only a few delicate lines, yet his posture gives the scene a gentle sense of life and quiet purpose.
Beyond him, boats, wooden structures and slender masts gather along the distant shoreline. Jehan Chan uses expressive black marks and softened washes to suggest their forms without describing every detail, allowing the fishing village to emerge like a treasured memory through the morning mist.
The restrained palette of pale blue, warm cream and smoky black creates a nostalgic, contemplative mood. Fine cracked textures spread across the water and background, adding depth and character while preserving a beautiful sense of openness. The work is a poetic reflection of Malaysia’s traditional coastal life—simple, peaceful and increasingly rare.
