Born in 1970 on Silk Island, Kampung Lagaton, Sabah, Dr. Zaimie Sahibil is a respected Malaysian artist, academic, curator, and researcher whose artistic journey is deeply rooted in the culture, traditions, and landscapes of Borneo. His passion for art was nurtured from a young age through a family rich in traditional craftsmanship, including weaving, sculpture, and boat building.
Known for his versatility, Dr. Zaimie works across various mediums including watercolor, acrylic, oil, mixed media, collage, and printmaking. His artworks often draw inspiration from Sabah’s unique heritage, island communities, traditional architecture, and the relationship between people and nature.
Beyond his artistic practice, he is also a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sabah and has played an important role in promoting visual arts education, research, and cultural preservation in Sabah and Malaysia.
His paintings are instantly recognizable for their rich textures, vibrant colours, and strong sense of cultural identity. Through his work, Dr. Zaimie not only creates beautiful visual experiences but also preserves the stories, traditions, and spirit of Sabah for future generations.
