Lye Yau Fatt (b. 1950) is a respected senior Malaysian artist from Alor Setar, Kedah, celebrated for his evocative depictions of Malaysian life, traditional villages, bustling markets, and nostalgic landscapes. His artworks reflect a deep appreciation for the country’s cultural heritage, capturing the warmth and simplicity of everyday moments with remarkable sensitivity.
He pursued formal art studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Singapore, and later expanded his artistic practice through a printmaking workshop in New York in 1986. Working across watercolour, printmaking, painting, and sculpture, Lye has developed a distinctive artistic language that combines technical mastery with heartfelt storytelling.
Lye Yau Fatt held his first solo exhibition at Sum Art Gallery in 1979 and has since participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both locally and internationally. Throughout his career, he has received several notable honours, including the PMAG Open Art Competition (Sculpture) award, the PNB Watercolour Landscape Award, and the Malaysian Watercolour Society Award, recognising his significant contribution to Malaysian art.
Influenced by his mentor, the renowned Nanyang pioneer Cheong Soo Pieng, Lye developed a style characterised by warm earthy tones, rich textures, and compositions that celebrate the beauty of ordinary Malaysian life. Whether portraying quiet village scenes, traditional architecture, or market life, his paintings evoke a sense of familiarity, nostalgia, and serenity that continues to resonate with collectors today.
